Then I got married and someone else shared the bed - it was no longer MY space and that 'alone' moment was gone.
I tried to make a niche for myself at the dining room table once the kids were born, with 5 of them, there wasn't a spare place in the house and certainly nowhere was private.
I'm afraid that hasn't changed a lot in the past 20 years, I still don't have a space I can call mine, and there is no privacy to be had in this house... but on rare occasion, when no one is home I may be able to steal a moment to be w/ my pen. (Yes, I am still a pen/paper writer) The moment has to be right though - if the dishes are still in the sink, or the clothes need folded, or the house is in need of some serious picking up....I can't sit down and focus on thoughts in my head... because my thoughts are outside my head.
It makes me sad sometimes that I don't get to write often enough, but at least when I do get one of those moments...it tends to gush right out of me - a real cathartic outlet. Four of the five kids are grown now, Three of them have moved out...and the fourth is headed to college in the fall... maybe a space will show itself and I'll get my groove back. ;) ...Making plans for that soon to be vacant bedroom.. *grin*Terri /aka ShadyMuttonhttp://shadymutton.livejournal.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-54859587213368337052010-03-21T14:09:29.879-04:002010-03-21T14:09:29.879-04:00For an art form such as writing, mixing up your wr...For an art form such as writing, mixing up your writing places might be a good idea. Every day, every STORY, is different. So shouldn't the writing spaces be different as well?

Thanks for sharing your thought Elaine.

Note: you guys have really opened my eyes! These things keep my atmosphere artistic (or they remind me to be) and it helps.

Sometimes, the office gets too...something. That's when having an alphasmart or laptop is useful. I go to any number of coffeehouses, delis, places. I put in my headphones and write away. I've never been too distracted by people/happenings around me. In fact, I tune it out so much (yet it makes me feel like I'm out amongst the living) that occasionally someone has startled me by walking up and asking me if I want a soda refill :)

Great question -

Elaine
@writerscanvasThe Writers Canvas, Author Elaine Callowayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05876278015231782761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-78273064245032394282010-03-21T13:55:29.200-04:002010-03-21T13:55:29.200-04:00Workspace! Writing should be play, and it could have an adverse affect on our writing If we attach a moniker like "Workspace" to it. Sometimes having a "Home Office" means being cooped up, whereas a writer should wander the earth, and experience things, perhaps?

Your comments are enlightening. Thank you.

Note: We're all different - I. myself, tend to enjoy my private space, where everything is familiar. Others may hate being in the same workspace day after day. The printer works & I've got bits of paper in various sizes stuck to the wall with scotch tape. They tell me what people like Vonnegut & Bukowski think of writing. Just to keep those things in my head, you know.

There are piles of books here in this space. Books on writing & publishing. Their spines have words like "literature", "fiction", & "writer's market".

This space, it's very much a writer's workspace. Exactly why I always grab a couple of pens, my trusty notebook & go somewhere else.

I can't get any writing done in here.

Cheers!Rasmeniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14013666740285633677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-43389023690222663642010-03-21T12:52:27.960-04:002010-03-21T12:52:27.960-04:00Some people can ignore surroundings and just write...Some people can ignore surroundings and just write, but I need a certain environment to get me in that zone; surrounded by books and papers, shelves stuffed with novels, that kind of thing. Sometimes I can even write in a coffee shop, if the mood is just right.

It's all about the mood your space sets, be it a coffee shop or a boiler room.

Thanks for your comments!TheWritersDenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11906707226438261959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-37353624276155115682010-03-21T12:39:23.437-04:002010-03-21T12:39:23.437-04:00I need to be surrounded by books and/or people. Having said that my most productive writing space was at the end of the bed in my old student digs - warm, quiet and surrounded by the soft noises of the seven other people sharing the flat with me beyond my locked door. Currently my writing space is in the livingroom, a place that used to work really well or me and now... not so much. Maybe it really is the metaphysics!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-66377883789338566612010-03-20T23:19:41.738-04:002010-03-20T23:19:41.738-04:00I need to be surrounded by my nick-nacks and books...I need to be surrounded by my nick-nacks and books too. Stephen King, in his book "On Writing" said the same thing; he had a desk the size of a T-Rex in a spacious converted loft - and he spent most of the time there wrecked out of his skull, a "Captain in charge of a voyage to nowhere", as he put it. So he finally got rid of the monstrosity, shoved a small desk in a corner and .... the writing gods approved.

Thanks for commenting!

-DavidTheWritersDenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11906707226438261959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508041283408288663.post-39236309322370685662010-03-20T16:25:09.852-04:002010-03-20T16:25:09.852-04:00I used to write in a huge sunny room in which had ...I used to write in a huge sunny room in which had a spectacular view of the ocean. Sounds nice right? For some reason, however, I was more often than not unproductive. In the end I put it down to the cavernous space and the sunshine streaming through the windows.

Having moved, I now write in a tiny loft in which I get to by scrambling up a steep narrow staircase. Once inside I am unable to stand up, fully. It is cold in the winter. Hot in the summer. But nothing a fan or heater can't rectify. For me, it's perfect. My little slice of heaven. Isolated from the rest of the house/world.

Each to their own. What works, works.Just Wendy https://www.blogger.com/profile/05268645629027109282noreply@blogger.com
